Meet the Team: Crystal Young

Our first employee spotlight of the year is Crystal Young. Crystal is a medical assistant at the Beach office. Learn a bit more about her here and say hello when you see her in the office. Q: Where are you from? A: Ocala, Fl Q: What’s your favorite activity after work? A: Working out at the gym, snuggling with my little girl on the couch watching cartoons. Q: How many children do you have, or would you like to have? A: I have a 6-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old stepson. Q: Do you have pets? What kind? A: A yellow Labrador and a miniature Schnauzer Q: How would you describe your job at Jax Beach Pediatrics? A: Fulfilling. I go home at the end of the day feeling like I have accomplished something. Let’s not leave out that it’s a blast, I love all my girls at the beaches. Q: Are you what you wanted to be when you grew up? A: I always wanted to be in the medical field……so, YES! Q: What’s the number 1 question you get asked in the office? A: “Is Katrina Cinca here?” Q: Have you seen in local trends (in illness) in the area that parents have questions about? A: RSV Q: Do you have any tips about what parents can do to make the most of their visit with the doctor? A: Tell the provider what you are here for “today.” Q: Tell us one funny story from the office. A: Well, lets just say I’ve gotten a lot of “bizarre” stories that I have had to translate for Dr. Benitez in layman terms. That’s always interesting.

Meet the Team: Katrina Dembeck

This month we would like to introduce you to Katrina Dembeck, ARNP! You can see Katrina in our Jacksonville Beach office and here, you can learn a little more about her. Q:  Where are you from? A: I’m a Jacksonville native, but I did live in Hawaii for a year. Q:  What’s your favorite activity after work? A: Spending time with my family, my husband Jason and my 3 dogs, Marley, Ziggy, and Peaches. Q:  What do you like best about your job? A: I love working with kids everyday and the best is when they give you a big hug. Q:  How would you describe your job at Pediatric Care Center? A: Fun and interesting, never a dull moment. Q:  What is something you look forward to in the future? A: Having children! Q:  What’s the #1 question you get asked in the office? A: Oh, there are 2 Katrinas?? Q:  Do you have any tips about what parents can do? A: Have a thermometer and take your child’s temperature when they are sick, so many don’t take a temperature and say they felt hot. Also, bring your list of questions, because of course we all forget our questions as soon as the provider walks in the room. Q:  What made you go into the Pediatric field? A: It definitely wasn’t in my plans, but I have to say Katrina Cinca inspired me! I fell in love with pediatrics during my pediatric clinical rotation with Katrina and I just kept coming back for more. Q:  If patients could describe you, what 3 words would they use? A: Kind, gentle, caring Q:  Tell us one funny story from the office. A: So many, hard to pick. But the kids make me laugh everyday.

Meet the Team: Lacey Scandaliato

This month,  Lacey Scandaliato, shares a little about herself. She is yet another smiling face at the reception desk in our office! Let’s get to know Lacey! Q: Where are you from? A: I was born in New Orleans, but I’ve lived in Jacksonville most of my life. Q: What is your favorite activity after work? A: My favorite thing to do after work is just relax. Not only do I work but I go to school full-time too. Q: How many children do you have or would you like to have? A: I can’t decide if I want 2 or 3 children. Q: Do you have any pets? A: Yes, I have a cockatiel named Winnie. 2 dogs, Frankie and Lucky, 3 cats, Bugsy, Pino, and Belle, and last but not least a sulcata tortoise named Gus. Q: How would you describe your job at Jax Beach Pediatrics? A: There’s definitely never a dull moment here. There is either always a phone to answer or a patient to check-in. Q: Are you what you wanted to be when you grow up? A: Well I am still growing up; I’m currently going to school to get a degree in Elementary Education. Q: What’s the number one question that you get asked in the office? A: The number one question I get asked is “do you speak Spanish?” Unfortunately I don’t speak Spanish, I took American Sign Language instead. Q: Have you seen in local trends (in illness) in the area that parents have questions about? A: There have been a lot of calls about rashes. The main question is “can I just have something called in?” Rashes could be from so many different things, and the doctor can’t diagnose over the phone so they always recommend bringing the child in to be evaluated. Q: Do you have any tips about what parents can do to make the most of their visits with the doctor? A: Write all the questions down so there isn’t one you forget and be completely honest with your child. Make them aware that the appointment is for them and let them know that they are getting shots at that visit. Many kids come in and the first question they ask us is “am I getting shots?” Tell us a funny story from the office. It was when the beach office started closing at 8:00pm. Nilsis and I were getting ready to leave and I had realized I didn’t have a key to lock the door. We were just going to wait until the cleaning crew arrived, but twenty minutes had passed and they hadn’t arrived yet. So I ended up calling one of the morning girls that was out in Ponte Vedra. After driving for fifteen minutes I got the key then got a phone call from Nilsis saying that the cleaning crew was there and we didn’t need the key.

Meet the Team: Anyse Glenna, RN

This month, we would like to learn a bit more about Anyse Glenna, one of our RNs. Q: Where are you from? A: Jacksonville, Florida Q: What’s your favorite activity after work? A: Spending time with my two boys, Justin and Kaleb and my Dad. Q: What do you like best about your job? A: The interaction with the patients and parents. Working at night I get to do one on one patient care. During the day they see numerous people before they get to the provider but at night they walk in straight to me. And I love the things the kids say sometimes, how they describe how they feel or what hurts. Q; How long have you worked at Pediatric Care Center? A: Almost three and a half years! I was hired May 2008. Q; How would you describe your job at Pediatric Care Center? A: I work the 8p-8a night shift. I’m there to answer any questions you may have in the middle of the night or to be there if you need to bring your son or daughter in if you feel they need to be seen and it can’t wait until morning. I also take care of our patients that we keep overnight, whether it’s for IV fluids, antibiotics, breathing issues or just observation. We always have a provider on call that’s just a phone call away. Q; What is something you look forward to in the future? A: Buying my own property and building my very first house. Q; What’s the #1 question you get asked in the office? A: Do you speak Spanish? Q: Do you have any tips about what parents can do? A: Everyone needs a thermometer in their house! If your child is one year or under taking their temperature rectally is the most accurate. A lot of parents call and tell us their child has a fever but they are only basing this on how warm the child feels. They don’t have a thermometer to actually take the temperature with. Q: Tell us a funny story from the office. A: One night Dr. Benitez called me and asked me if I heard about the family of five that was coming to the office. He said they were all vomiting and had diarrhea. I told him No, thinking how busy I was about to be! He then paused and busted out laughing and said, “There’s no one coming! It was a joke! Hope you have a good night!”

Learn more about RSV >> Q: What do you tell parents to help them prepare for their next visit to the office? A: It was a crazy Monday night and we are ready to leave. Lacey set the alarm and we locked the doors. As we walked out we closed the gate, said our good byes and went home. About two hours later I get a phone call that we had locked Dr. Patel in and she couldn’t leave. All I have to say is not only was it funny but it was pretty embarrassing as well.

Dr. B’s remedy for a constipated tummy

Ever wonder how you could help your baby with constipation? Try a bit of the good old-fashioned corn syrup to help relieve constipation for young tummies….but please do so in moderation! Use 1 tablespoon of Karo syrup with 4 oz of water daily but for no more than 3 days. You can start this as early as 8 weeks old. This will help regulate your baby’s digestive tract. Other easy at home exercises to relieve your constipated baby: 1.) Tummy Massage: Softly rub and massage baby’s tummy in a clockwise direction. Position your hands at baby’s naval and move in a clockwise motion, move out and away from the center of the belly. 2.) Warm Bath: Giving a warm bath will help your baby to relax and will also move things along. After taking the baby out of the warm bath – massage the belly. 3.) Bicycle legs: This is a common thing all parents do, but it can actually be doing lots of good to your child. Not only is this good for constipation but it also helps with gassy babies. Remember, do this gently and not too fast.

Fennel Helps With Gas

Fennel tea is a wonderful and easy way to help your baby with gas. Made from an herb and water, you can give ½ to 1 ounces of tea to your gassy baby between regular feedings. This is a very simple recipe that only takes 10 minutes to make. Fennel Tea: Take 1 cup of water Add 1 teaspoon of Fennel Boil it for about 7 to 8 minutes Strain fennel – (you may add sugar to taste) Pour into a container with lid to store what is not used
